The outcome was that the deck had more room and looked original as it matched the same height of the previous one. Four coats of decking oil were applied to enhance the look and longevity of the deck. You will see that the clients pets are also using the deck. Two new gates had to be built as the old ones were cactus.
Job prerequisites were to remove the old deck as it was a potential liability. Design and build a functional and aesthetic structure. Clean access around the side of the house and a fence with gates for security.
We had a lot of concrete to cut and break up with jackhammers. This could only be done effectively by machine. There was about 20 cubic metres of concrete to remove, aged and reinforced.
We encountered reactive soil of a type that I had never come across before. See the video below.
The solution was to dig it out and fill up the hole with crusher dust, about 8 cubic metres altogether.
We decided to colour the concrete a charcoal colour to highlight the plant and timber colours.
The pool area was an area that was not used. It was always full of weeds and the owner wanted to make it functional and appealing to the eye. A deck was the practical solution. The deck is built within the pool fenced area.
Happy client and a good looking deck. Both the pool and deck complement one another and, most importantly of all, you have functionality.
There was an existing deck which had waterproofing problems. The levels were wrong, with water falling towards the entry. The existing deck had to be stripped back to the joists , new joists put in and a bigger bearer and more steel posts. It was then re-sheeted, waterproofed and tiled. A clear roof was installed to allow sufficient light into the dining/living room and provide privacy from the unit complex next door.
As you can see from this picture, it gets pretty dark when the sun goes over the building. That is why design is important when looking at the style and materials used in relation to the geographical location.
Build to plan. The clients wanted to incorporate their dining lounge area with a big deck which could be used for entertainment. The deck’s high pitched ceiling was achieved by using scissor trusses.
